There is no Ontario program that hands every senior a free grab bar. There are, however, four real ways to get grab bars installed for free or for far less than full price, and this page walks through each one plainly: the Trenworks free grab bar offer, our limited-time installation discount, the federal tax credit, and the provincial and municipal programs that fund bathroom safety work for people who qualify.
1. A free stainless grab bar, installed, with a bathtub step cutout
When Trenworks installs a bathtub step cutout, the low step that turns your existing tub into a walk-in shower, the installation includes your choice of a free stainless steel grab bar, installed, or a free anti-slip treatment on the tub floor. The bar is the same 500 lb rated brushed stainless bar we sell on its own, anchored to suit your wall and positioned during the walkthrough with you. It is not a coupon or a mail-in offer: the installer fits it on the same visit.
The free bar comes only with a Trenworks-installed cutout. Do-it-yourself cutout kits are a separate product, shipped for you to install, and do not include a grab bar or installation. Details of the cutout itself are on our sister site: bathtub to shower conversion by Trenworks BathCutter.
2. Up to 60% off grab bar installation, for a limited time
If you do not need a cutout and simply want grab bars, our current promotion takes up to 60% off a grab bar installation. Every job is quoted from your photos before anything is booked, so the price you approve is the price you pay, and every installed bar carries our five-year parts and labour warranty. Full details are on the grab bar installation service page.
3. The federal Home Accessibility Tax Credit
Bathroom accessibility work such as grab bars and a bathtub cutout can qualify for the federal Home Accessibility Tax Credit, a non-refundable credit on eligible expenses each year, claimed on your own tax return with our invoice. Anyone 65 or older, or eligible for the Disability Tax Credit, qualifies, and a family member who supports them can often claim it as well. Starting with the 2026 tax year the same expense cannot be claimed under both this credit and the Medical Expense Tax Credit, so your accountant picks one. We are not tax advisors, so confirm eligibility with your accountant or the CRA, but keep the invoice: many of our customers use the credit to bring the effective cost of their grab bars down further.
4. Ontario programs that fund grab bars for people who qualify
- March of Dimes Canada, Home and Vehicle Modification Program. Funds home modifications, including bathroom safety work, for Ontario residents with a substantial impairment expected to last a year or more. It is income-tested and applications go through March of Dimes Canada directly.
- Ontario Renovates. Delivered by your municipality or region (Toronto, Durham, York, Peel and others), it offers forgivable loans for accessibility repairs to lower-income homeowners. Intake windows and amounts vary by municipality, so check your local housing services office.
- Veterans Independence Program. Veterans Affairs Canada can cover home adaptations, grab bars included, for eligible veterans and some survivors.
- Home care occupational therapy. If you receive home care through Ontario Health atHome, ask your care coordinator for an occupational therapy assessment. The therapist’s written recommendation for grab bar placement is also the document most funding programs ask for.
Two things do not cover grab bars: OHIP, and Ontario’s Assistive Devices Program, which funds mobility and medical equipment but not bathroom safety hardware. If a program on this list applies to you, we provide the itemized invoice and the product specifications the application needs.
What you get with every Trenworks grab bar
- Brushed stainless steel bars with a diamond-knurled grip, covered end caps and no exposed screw heads. They do not rust and are rated for 500 lb.
- Anchoring matched to the wall: ceramic tile as standard, porcelain, marble and granite with the extra work they need, and a WingIts anchor on any drywall.
- A walkthrough before work starts. The installer shows the bars and confirms where each one goes for how you actually move in the bathroom. If the bars are for a parent, we work with them directly on the positioning.
- One visit of one to three hours, a full cleanup, and bars ready to use 12 hours later once the sealant has set.
- A five-year parts and labour warranty on every installed bar.

Free grab bars for seniors: common questions
Are grab bars free for seniors in Ontario?
Not automatically. Ontario has no universal free grab bar program. Seniors get bars free or funded through the Trenworks free grab bar offer with a bathtub cutout installation, the federal Home Accessibility Tax Credit, and income-tested programs such as March of Dimes Canada and Ontario Renovates.
Does OHIP pay for grab bars?
No. OHIP does not cover grab bars, and the Assistive Devices Program does not cover bathroom safety hardware. The federal tax credit and the provincial and municipal programs listed on this page are the routes that do.
How do I get the free grab bar from Trenworks?
Book a Trenworks bathtub step cutout installation. The installation includes a free stainless grab bar installed on the same visit, or a free anti-slip treatment instead. Do-it-yourself cutout kits do not include a grab bar or installation.
What does grab bar installation cost without the free offer?
Every installation is quoted from your photos before it is booked, with the current up-to-60%-off promotion applied. The number of bars, the wall surface and whether drywall anchors are needed set the price, and it is confirmed in writing before the visit, never changed on the day.
Can I claim the tax credit on grab bars?
Grab bars installed to make a home safer for someone 65 or older, or eligible for the Disability Tax Credit, are the kind of expense the federal Home Accessibility Tax Credit is for. Keep the Trenworks invoice and confirm your eligibility with your accountant or the CRA.
Do you install grab bars in condos and apartments?
Yes. Most of our Toronto work is in condos and apartments. Everything arrives on one cart, nothing is left behind, and buildings are booked on weekday mornings.
