Fourteen years ago, a note on my kitchen table changed the direction of my business.
My mother had moved in with us. One afternoon while I was out, she slipped getting out of the bathtub. Her side hit the tub edge and she fractured several ribs; her head struck the toilet on the way down and left her with a concussion. She wrote a short note and left it on the kitchen table before calling for help. When I got home, I read it and drove straight to the hospital.
Mom became my first bathroom safety customer. I installed grab bars in the right places — mounted to studs, at the right heights, positioned for how her body actually moved in that bathroom. I added a bathtub step cutout so she could step in instead of climb over — I chose the specific cutout system that accepts a removable door cap later, so if her needs changed or family visited who wanted a full bath, we could convert it back with a simple add-on. I added an adjustable bathtub bench so she could sit safely, and a shower wand that clipped into a Delta grab bar mount so she could rinse without twisting her back.
To do the work properly, I trained under a factory-certified installer in my own home. I continued training for several more months before I was qualified to do the same work in other people’s homes. That’s how the bathroom safety side of Trenworks started — from a family need I never wanted another family to face.
What we do today
Trenworks has been a home services business since 2004. Since 2012, our focus has been bathroom safety installations for Ontario seniors, adults with limited mobility, and family caregivers who want to keep loved ones safely independent at home.
